this is our story
At Kazam Gymnastics, gymnastics is for everyone—no matter your age, experience, or background. The gym's mission has always been rooted in the belief that "it’s never too late to be awesome." In a world where people often feel disconnected, Kazam is a place where members are seen, heard, and appreciated. It’s more than just a gym—it’s a home for those who value community, challenge, and growth. Relationships built at Kazam are the foundation of its success, and that sense of connection is something members carry with them far beyond the gym walls.
The Start Of Kazam
Kazam began as "AlexKazam Gymnastics," founded by Alex MacInnis, a former national-level gymnast known for his coaching in the Ottawa CrossFit community. Alex dreamed of creating more than just a fitness program—he wanted a space where people could come together, challenge themselves, and grow in a supportive community. What started as a spark of passion and an idea slowly turned into reality. In July 2015, the first official Kazam classes were held at the Ottawa Gymnastics Centre (OGC). After hours, when the kids had left, Kazam members had the gym to themselves, with full access to its apparatus. It was a humble but exciting beginning.
AKG Program Expansion
As the demand for Kazam grew, the program was granted a small corner of the OGC—the "pommel horse room"—to operate out of. It wasn’t perfect, with old mats and busy transitions between kids' activities, but it became a sanctuary for Kazam members. The blue mats were pieced together, and the distinct gymnastics atmosphere fostered a sense of belonging. Members didn’t mind the less-than-ideal conditions, because the classes, running from 4:30 PM to 10:00 PM, brought energy, dedication, and excitement to every session.
Incorporation & New Partnership
As the program’s needs evolved, so did its leadership. Alex began to bring in community coaches, but it was his partnership with Dani—an enthusiastic member who believed in Kazam's vision—that truly pushed the program forward. Together, they incorporated the business and began laying the groundwork for bigger things to come.
Fundraising Success & Space Expansion
By 2018, Kazam had outgrown its limited space. Operating from a cramped 500-square-foot area with a rapidly growing membership wasn’t sustainable. Alex and Dani launched an Indiegogo campaign to fund the expansion, raising $110,000 through the support of the Kazam community. This overwhelming show of support marked a turning point in Kazam’s journey, fueling both the physical expansion and the sense of community.

COVID-19 & Kazam Online
When COVID-19 hit in March 2020, Kazam didn’t pause—it innovated. Within weeks, we launched an online platform offering live bodyweight strength classes to keep members active. A library of class recordings and a Virtual Onset Program focused on handstands, ring strength, and mobility were created. Kazam’s adaptability helped it thrive while many gyms struggled. Outdoor sessions at Tom Brown Park kept members motivated when restrictions eased. Check out the Spicy Abs Class, plus instructional videos like the 45-Degree Handstand, Bent Arm Body Lever, and Duck Walk on our YouTube channel.
city centre - New gym space
In June 2020, despite the uncertainty of the pandemic, Kazam took a leap and signed a lease for a new dedicated gym space at City Centre. This was a long-held dream, finally becoming reality. Renovations moved forward, and Kazam members were welcomed into the new space, a true home that reflected years of hard work, passion, and community effort.
growth & team expansion
By 2023, Kazam had not only survived the pandemic but also expanded. Classes ran seven days a week, adding noon and weekend sessions. What started as a one-man effort had grown into a thriving community with a 13-member coaching staff. Regular team meetings and community events kept Kazam’s vision strong, while glowing testimonials, like Jonathan Whitley’s, highlighted its impact. Kazam launched a kids’ program and began hosting workshops, from backflips to press-to-handstands. In 2024, Kazam will hold its first international workshop with Coach Erdi Babili from Australia.
major life changes & looking ahead
2024 brought big changes for Kazam's leadership. Dani and his family have made the difficult but exciting decision to move back to their home in Qatar with Dani’s continued support to Kazam from abroad, while Alex has embraced a new role as a father to baby Violette, born in September. Even as life shifted, Kazam’s coaching team ensured the gym’s operations continued smoothly. With the lease at City Centre set to expire in 2025, exciting new plans are in the works—including celebrating Kazam’s 10-year anniversary, expanding morning and daytime classes, launching a seniors’ program, and introducing a mom-and-baby class.
